Last week I tried on the Specialized BG S-Works road shoes and immediately fell in love with the fit. It was super snug and formed very well to my feet. They fit like socks. Although I initially wasn't a fan of the BOA Lace system, I definitely felt it's benefits once I was on the road. The pressure was equalized around my feet and I didn't feel any of those hot spots I sometimes get. It was also easier "dial" in the adjustments on the move than with a velcro strap or ratchet system like on my old pair of CAT-1 Gavia Carbon road shoes. I also switched to Speedplay pedals and paired with the new shoes, I'm getting a lot more power transfer to the pedals than before. The old CAT-1 shoes were paired with LOOK Kéo style pedals which, compared to the Speedplays, had a larger and bulkier profile. I also feel more power is being transferred since my feet are closer to the pedals now.

As far as transitioning, I took these out this past weekend for it's first trial at a duathlon and since the pedals were new and not yet broken in, I had problems getting in and out of them. This is just a matter of practice and breaking them in though. The shoes don't have a finger hook at the end to assist with putting the shoes on while moving, so this makes it a little difficult at first. After a little practice on the trainer, this really didn't bother me much though. With the shoes being so light, it was pretty easy to manage due to it's weight alone. Getting the tongue to the correct position prior to the mount will be important though as it's difficult to adjust the dials once pedaling on top of the shoes. Again, this will take more practice. Aside from the transition issues, the performance on the road definitely outweighs it in the long run.

A review can be found at cyclingnews.com and a video of the Boa Lacing system can be found on YouTube. I may actually look into my next pair of running shoes to have the Boa Lacing system.

4 Miles and 6x100

After work run was in 70 degree weather. Actually, I think what I'm really enjoying are the results. I can feel the quickness in my legs again, which also means they have finally recovered from the half marathon.

Ran this route after work for the first time. The route was a nice out and back strip along the water. It was a bit windy but I need the added resistance for Shamrock. The Garmin handled the interval timing well and I was able to do a hands off run.

Outside of training, my PC is still down. The hard drive crash was just an additional pain to deal with it. After a reinstall, I'm getting artifacts all over the screen and can't run anything graphic intensive. So I'm led to believe that it's either the motherboard or the video card, neither of which I feel like dealing with right now. I no longer have the passion to rip my PC apart and thoroughly test each component to find out what the problem is. I look at my PC and I just want to kick it but I'm reminded that I have a race in two weeks. At least I can always trust on my BlackBerry, unless I drop it again.

The countdown begins with 14 days until the Shamrock Marathon.

Well, there's 14 days left until the Shamrock Marathon and this is the last weekend to get any real training in before the tapering starts. People have to clean up after their dogs.

I'm confident with my short distance game but I'm still iffy about hitting the Boston qualifying time for the marathon. I missed out on some long distance runs because of weather and sickness. I'm really more concerned about the kick for the second half to keep the pace going and could have used more time doing tempo runs. I'm going to hang on to that pace group like my life depended on it on race day. Luckily if I don't make the Boston time, registration for the MCM doesn't open until April 7th and I can try again there.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black; With the interval training I put in for this year, I was expecting a PR but I didn't realize I was going to have to work for it with this much hills. I knew Williamsburg had hills but the course was relentless. From the start it was up and down, up and down with twists and turns. I was getting concerned at first because I haven't done much hill training except for Spinerval Hill workouts on the bike trainer, but I was surprisingly able to hold the pace. My target was a 7:15-7:20 pace but the field was fast and I went with the hills. I kept seeing the pace of 6:30, 6:45, and 7:00 on my Garmin and couldn't back off. I didn't want to back off. Part of it was because of the hills and part of it was the field of runners. Even on the uphills, I felt great and able to hold the pace. My legs never felt so good on the uphills.

The course was beautiful. It was part woods on tarmac, streets and soft dirt that felt like loose top soil with hay. It was horrible. One of the other runners described it as mulch so I guess that's what it was. My ankles buckled a few times but nothing serious. The course went through an underpass, which we eventually got to run on top of on the way back. It was pretty cool seeing the other runners that way. A wooden bridge took us over a lake that showed off some really nice estates.

After hitting mile 8, it felt like I was comfortably cruising at a 7:19 pace, so I decided I was going to kick it in for the last 2 miles. That never happened. At mile 11.1, I remember looking up a long steady hill. So I held it off but the hills kept coming. The hills and some wind eventually took it's toll on my pace but luckily I banked enough of a buffer early on in the course. I imagine with the way the hills are layed out, it would be difficult for me to get a negative split on a course like this. The finish was great, ending inside the Kaplan Arena of the William and Mary Hall. It reminded me of the Honolulu Marathon when we finished inside the Aloha Stadium.

Aside for some quirks I have with the race organization, the support was great. Although the course was scenic, it would be hard for me to recommend this race to any first time half marathoners. Race information was sparse, a challenging course, and with the lack of sports drinks on the course (only water), it's not as friendly as say the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon, but anyone looking for a challenge should do it.

Very happy with my new PR of 1:34:42 (previously 1:38:07), placing 9th in my AG and 100 overall.

The Nation's Triathlon 2009

So I have decided to go back to Blogger for my race write ups. I won't get into the why, but you can tell by the pictures.

Anyway, once we got to the Hilton, packet pickup was much less of a hassle than I thought it would be. In order to pick up your packet, you had to attend a race brief, get stamped as proof, then pick up your race bib, swim cap, race band and goodie bag. The event shirt was a nice technical tee from Craft.

The Expo wasn't as big as I would thought it would be, but that may have been because of the lack of space. You can only put so many vendors into a hotel. It's not like the expos you see here at the Pavilion at the Oceanfront but we did get to see a LOOK tri bike for about $13k.

After packet pickup, Kathy and I tried to get to the swim practice but in between hunger and me inputting the wrong streets into the GPS, we got lost. Parking in some random area, we found a little shopping center and decided to eat. I also found a small bike shop, called "The Bike Shop". I threw off my adjustments from my front derailleur the night before and was going to suck it up since I didn't think I would need my small ring but decided to see if these guys could do a quick look since it looked like from the outside they weren't very busy. The mechanic had two bikes on his stand and after I told him about the race on Sunday, he was cool enough to take one of the bikes he was working on off the stand and fix my gears...something I couldn't get one of our local national chain bike shops to do here, just from stopping by. Well after a few minutes, the gear was fixed and we had lunch in the same plaza. By the time we finished lunch, it was too late for the swim practice, so we went to the hotel to check in.

The hotel I booked was the State Plaza Hotel. It was only about a 15 minute walk to the race site. So we checked in and had the hotel park my truck overnight ($30). I grabbed my bike and we walked down to the transition area for the bike racking. The walk was straight down 23rd Street, passing the Lincoln Memorial. If I was to this again next year, I would use the same hotel. One of my favorite spots, Cafe Asia, was 3 blocks away as well.

Bike racking was straight forward. At first, the idea of leaving my bike overnight on a rack exposed to the elements didn't sit right with me, but some people suggested bringing plastic bags to cover parts of the bike. It was also not a good idea to set up your area the night prior. Who knows who might "borrow" your gear by morning time, so I just left my bike on the rack and put my cyclometer in my bento box.

By the end of the day, all the walking around can take a toll on your legs muscles but luckily I had my compression socks on to help it out. Have to thank Don for the info on compression socks.

Day 2: Race Day

Wake up was at 4am. I never have problems walking up on race day. I have more problems sleeping the night prior but thanks to all the walking around that wasn't a problem. Transition opened up at 5am and I wanted to get in as soon as possible to pick up my chip and set up my area. I downed a Clif Bar and Gatorade for my pre-race fuel.

TA set up was a breeze. My neighbor on the rack was a no-show so I had a little more room with my gear. For the bike set up, I went with an aero bottle for hydration (Cytomax) and left my bottle racks on my seat empty for tools, like the CO2 cartridge. I filled my bento box with Clif Shot Bloks and small pieces of a Clif Bar to fuel up during the ride for the run.

Swim:
1500 meters
49:31

I'll be honest and say that I was a little apprehensive of the swim. This is my weakest discipline and after my DNF at the Tavern Tri, I didn't know what to expect. Luckily wetsuits were legal and no rain came down Saturday. They changed the initial plan of launching two waves at the same time, going in opposite directions, to only one wave all in the same direction due to safety concerns. The wave releases were fast at 3 minutes apart. I had more problems trying to move through the swim pen to get to the water for my start than I did with the swim itself. The swim was awesome. The chops weren't bad at all and it looked worse than it felt. At the start, I stayed off to the side, closer to shore and away from the pack. There were still 2 other waves from my age group to start behind me but after them would be the 25-29 AG and that only allowed me 9 minutes of a lead. There were only a few bumps with other swimmers though and from staying on the outside, I was able to avoid the pack and swim at my own pace. This caused me to take a longer swim route but my goal today was to finish the swim.

I will say this, practicing bilateral breathing in the pool helped out greatly on the buoy turns. I swim breathing on my right side but can breathe on my left for a short distance and with the turn buoys on my left, I was able to switch sides and circle around the turn buoys with no problems keeping them in sight.

The exit out of the water was a little shaky. My legs were a bit wobbly and my body was still trying to adjust after rolling side to side for 49 minutes but after a few strides, my balance was back. Getting out of that water gave me a huge boost of confidence and at that point, the race no longer became a race for me and as far as I was concerned, my goal was reached and the bike/run course were just training opportunities for Augusta.

TA 1:
4:51

After finishing the swim, I no longer looked at the clock. I relaxed and took my time getting out of my wetsuit, but that was difficult regardless. All of the body glide that I had around my heels were gone.

Bike:
25 miles
1:14:50

The bike was fun and scary. It wasn't as crowded as I thought it would be but it was crowded enough that you were with someone or a group the whole time. Drafting was unavoidable at times. Hills were abundant but nothing too severe. Just some that were grinds at gradual inclines. One downhill got me to 33 mph. I would say that the road conditions were horrible. With the amount of bikers on the road and at some of the speeds we were hitting, it was even dangerous. I had never seen so many water bottles, bento boxes and gear on the ground before. Aero bottles even were knocked off the bikes. There were man holes on the road that were sunk in at least an inch deep. There were breaks in the streets that had 4 inch gaps, bumps that were high enough to launch your front wheel. For riders in the aero position, putting weight onto their bars, this was dangerous. Passing was also chaotic. Proper race etiquette requires you to pass on the left, verbally announcing your passing but with riders all over the roads, passing was wherever you could fit through. I was passing one guy on his left and as I came up side by side with him I hear "passing center" from another rider behind me then he slices through right in between us. One downhill spiraled down with blind turns and a safety had to be positioned to notify the racers to slow down with a megaphone because at the bottom was a nice surprise bump. The bottom was also littered with gear, either from gear getting knocked off the bikes after the bump or maybe from a crash. Although I still enjoyed the bike course, I was glad to get back into the TA.

TA 2:
4:49
Decided to make a pit stop and stretch my legs out.

Run:
10k
48:46

My strongest discipline but it's still difficult to transition into if you're not efficient on the bike. Fueling on the bike and raising my seat up more to offload some work from my quads and calves helped out as well. I fought side stitches the entire time and kept having to massage my abdominal area to keep the pain manageable. This is one thing I still have problems with. I no longer have cramping/fueling problems with the run but the side stitches continue to hinder me. My legs really wanted to open up but the pain was sometimes too much and I didn't want to stop. I just kept massaging my abs, sides and stomach area as the pain became too much and just cruised with the pace. I'm hoping this doesn't haunt me for Augusta.

Total Time: 3:02:45

This was a new PR for me. I had given myself around 3:30:00, since this was the time of my previous OLY at the Bumpass Triathlon back in April.

All in all, the race was definitely worth it, for anyone. There were plenty of beginners out there, even with mountain bikes and commuters. With the flat run profile, this would be a great race for any beginner, just be careful on the bike ride. With a September date, that's also plenty of time to train up for during the year. I will more than likely do this again next year but would be great to do with a group of friends. The support crew was great and even tourists were getting into it.

The mayor of D.C. though is a beast, Mayor Adrian Fenty. He finished at 2:21:28 and competed in the elite category.

<tr class="hover" onmouseover="if (this.className != 'clicked') { this.className = 'hover'; }" onmouseout="if (this.className != 'clicked') { this.className = 'true-row'; }" onclick="this.className = (this.className == 'clicked' ? This was my first MTB duathlon so I didn't know how I would do. I think I got a little too laid back with the training as I completely neglected any MTB training rides and hoped on my road biking to pick up the slack, but this was apparently not the case. I'll just post the race details as I entered it in beginnertriathlete.com:

Fat Tire Duathlon
2009-01-18
Virginia Beach, Virginia
United States
Kale Running and Team Tri Power
37F / 3C
Overcast

Duathlon - Other
Total Time = 1h 44m 25s
Overall Rank = 40/62
Age Group = 35 - 39
Age Group Rank = 9/12

Pre-race routine:

Ate an energy bar and drank Gatorade.

There was not much training for this one. I've been running here and there for about 4 miles and mostly road biking. I only rode my mountain bike once within the last 3 months, hoping the road biking would pick up some of the slack. This was not the case.

Event warmup:

Light stretching and running.

   Run

Comments:

I put the pace at where I wanted it to be. Being it a XC run and that I still had the MTB and another 5k coming up, I didn't push too hard.

What would you do differently?:

Stretched out and loosened up more.

T1

Comments:

The TA was short and small. I didn't have to travel far to get to my bike and my position on the rack was on the center isle.

Coming in was a little rough since I was a little winded from the hills prior to the TA. Also my shoes weren't the best for transitions. I had MTB shoes with laces and velcro. I forgot to pick up some quick laces so I had to spend some time tying up laces and it wasn't as easy as I thought in 30 degree weather.

What would you do differently?:

Get some quick laces for my MTB shoes.

   Bike

Comments:

I knew this would be my weakest part. I did well on the flat/road portions with all the road bike training. I was even able to drop into an aero position and pass a few folks. They eventually caught back up though when we went off road. I couldn't find the power and balance like I used to have last year to maneuver efficiently through the off road portions. Also, being sore from riding the trainer the night before didn't help either.

What would you do differently?:

Get on the mountain bike more to train up the leg muscles.

T2

Comments:

Just like in T1, could had been more efficient if I didn't have to untie laces.

What would you do differently?:

Quick laces.

   Run

Comments:

I couldn't get my legs to get moving after leaving T2. I'm sure it's because of the mountain bike portion and not having my legs conditioned for the transition into the run. Some minor muscle cramps shortly after T2 and took a minute to massage it away.

What would you do differently?:

Train on the mountain bike more and some bricks.

Post race

Warm down:

Not much. The tape needed to be replaced because of the damage my bike took back at the Richmond Sprint Triathlon in October.

From Cape Henry Duathlon 2008

Figuring it wouldn't be too bad, I stopped by Performance Bikes on the way home from picking up my race packet. Well after reading the instructions on the back, it definitely didn't look hard at all. I picked out a red and black marble color. White looked good but it looks worse when it gets dirty.

From Cape Henry Duathlon 2008

This is what the new marble tape vs. the stock white tape looked like. I may go back to white one day.

From Cape Henry Duathlon 2008

This is the final outcome. Like I said, it wasn't hard at all. The factory tape had adhesive behind it so I had to remove some of it. The new bar tape didn't have an adhesive back but luckily some of it stuck on the bars from the factory tape. Overall, it's a new look and hopefully it may help me spot my bike on the rack now...unless someone else has a Fuji Roubaix with red/black marble tape.

I have no idea how I'm going to do tomorrow. I haven't done any bricks since Richmond. I haven't done any group rides and have only ridden once over 20 miles on the bike. My run has been a lot better though, keeping 5k at a little over a 7 min/mile pace. I'm hoping I can keep a 7:30 pace tomorrow for the first 5k. For the bike, I can only hope for a 18-19 mph pace. For the final run, I hope I can keep it at around a 7:30 pace again. I've never ridden in the rain or even wet conditions, so I'm hoping not to make another spill. This time I'm not messing with rolling transitions or clipped shoes. I'll practice those more during winter. If it does rain, I'm hoping it happens during my run. I still enjoy running in the rain.

Circuit City Files for Bankruptcy

First CompUSA and now Circuit City. Today, the Virginia-based company (along with 17 affiliates) petitioned for Chapter 11 protection in Richmond as it attempts to survive under the crushing pressure from Best Buy / Walmart. Beyond that, details about the outfit's future are unclear, though Best Buy has reportedly stated that it "might take over stores that distressed rivals close." I ran this 2 years ago but that was when it was recreational 5k. This year, as well as last year, they had a "competitive" category. On top of this, my work was able to expense the registration since this would be a team event but we could either choose the walk, recreational 5k or the competitive 5k.

Training into this was some light running during the weeks since I had just come off the Richmond Sprint Triathlon the week prior. I figured I wouldn't have to do much and there wasn't much I can do anyway. I was planning to do a sub-7:30 pace though. According to the site, about 7,000 people registered for the race so it was going to be crowded. Kathy was with me and she was going to do the 5k Recreational run but they had filled up so without a second thought, she decided to enter into the 5k Comptetitive category.

Race morning was cold and wet. Luckily I was able to find my favorite parking spot at the Oceanfront and walk to the nearby packet pickup. After packet pickup, we met at our designated spot and went to take our group photo. Group photo was quick but the race had already started by the time we finished. I took my time getting to the starting line thinking there would be a chip mat there to clock our start time. Man was I wrong. There was no mat so I had no idea how much time I had lost because there was also no time clock that I could see. I relied on my wrist watch and started the timer at the starting line.

Running down Atlantic was fun. I was passing and zig zagging other runners that wanted to hang back and enjoy the run/walk. I didn't bother keeping pace on my watch and ran at whatever pace I felt comfortable, which was fast for the first half.

I got down to the turn around point and made my left onto the boardwalk and that's when the wind hit us. This was expected though. I can't remember ever doing a race at the Oceanfront without the wind getting in the way. I finished the race at 25:13, according to the finish line clock. My watch read 22:00. That puts me at a little over a 7:04 / mile pace. Regardless, it was still a fun race for a good cause. There were plenty of different vendors and food after the race. I was even able to find a free 5k race next week for CHKD, so I'll be back at the Oceanfront again for another short race.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://joeinmotion.blogspot.com/2008/10/susan-g-komen-race-for-cure-5k.html' title='Susan G. This is the second rider from team Gerolsteiner caught doping, the other being Stefan Schumacher. It looks like the German site has already removed Schumacher as one of their riders, though his picture still lingers. This is the fourth rider so far that has failed the test. Even before Kohl's drug results came out, there have been various debates circulating on whether or not road cycling should be banned from future Olympics. The IOC has called for a retest of the Beijing 2008 frozen samples to test for new generation drugs and if enough fail, this could hurt the image of cycling even more. I still think banning the sport is a little extreme considering how many other sports are just as tarnished, such as MMA with anabolic steroids. It's still a competitor's responsibility so they should be the ones directly punished. These 2-4 year bans are too soft as part of the punishment. The penalty should include a lifetime ban or something as strict to outweigh the risk of taking the substance. It's not like the sport is going to be short of clean, competitive riders to fill in the slots of those failing the tests.

Richmond Sprint Triathlon 2008

finished the Richmond Sprint Triathlon in 1:20:08 (unofficial).
Sent via BlackBerry

Official Times [link]
400m Swim: 11:27 / Rank: 43
T1: 3:09 / Rank: 12
20k Bike: 39:38 / Rank: 14
T2: 2:02 / Rank: 35
5k Run: 23:56 / Rank: 12
Total Time: 1:20:09

I first have to say that the race was BLAST! Their website looks to be under construction at the moment but their shop was impressive. It was two story, with the 1st floor for runners and the basement area for road bikes, mountain bikes and the shop. They had Cervélo bikes that I'm used to seeing and I want to say I saw an Orbea black and white Orca that was gorgeous. The swag was great, heavily sponsored by Napier Realtors.

Wake up was at 5:15am. Transition area opened up at 6:30am. The ACAC Fitness area was impressive as well. The indoor pool was huge, 50 meters with 8 lanes and smaller pools outside. There was a also an indoor tennis court in another building and they had a lot of machines in the workout floor. It definitely felt like a private club.

Swim
The swim involved splitting the pool between odds and evens on each side. Each side had 4 lanes. We started in order by race number. Each of us had to swim out 50 meters to the end, come back down the same lane. Then we had to duck under the lane dividers into the next lane and repeat. This would equal out to the 400 meters by the time you finished the 4th lap. Swimmers were released in 15 sec intervals to lessen traffic in the lanes. We had to submit our estimated times prior to the race in order to place us in our proper seed. I saw some people get mowed down by other swimmers and some pretty bad traffic causing about 3 swimmers to just stop, while they figured out who goes where.

My time was scheduled to start at around 8:45am. After swimming at the PA Rec center for 25 meters at a time, doing 50 had to take some getting used to. My first lap felt faster than I had planned. It wasn't until the 2nd half of my 2nd lap did I start feeling a little fatigued. I backed it off at the 3rd and picked up back up at the last 50 of the 4th lap. I did give up 3 spots to other swimmers that I knew I could make up on the bike and run. Getting in and out of T1 was systematic and I remembered to take my Cliff Bloks this time.

Bike
This part alone was fun to ride. We rode out in traffic that was supported by local sheriffs. They controlled each intersection allowing racers to go through without any interference. The roads also had bike lanes that made it easy to pass. On top of that, the motorists who passed us all stayed on the left side.

I hit a downhill that had me at 30+ mph and the rush was intense. I topped out my gears, which I have never done before. Naturally, what goes down must come up and unfortunately, when I started my first climb, my chain popped as I switched from my front small ring to the larger. Luckily, I was used to this and I only gave up about 20 secs. Only 3 other riders passed me but these were the same three I passed earlier in the bike leg.

The rest of the hills worked to my advantage. I had no more chain issues and I was able to manage the front gears properly to keep a consistent pace up and down the hills. I saw other bikers struggling up the hills, especially the ones on mountain bikes...sick. Gotta give those riders credit. I continued passing other riders and never giving up any to others, so that continued to fuel my drive. All of this would not last long though. As I passed the final rider before entering the T2 area, I began my rolling transition. I managed to get my left foot out and plant it on top of my shoe but my right shoe was giving me problems. I looked up and before I realized it, the yellow dismount line crept up and I was still moving at about 15 mph. With my right hand fumbling with my right foot, this left me with my left hand on my brakes. Which brakes does the left hand control? The front...so yeah you can imagine what happens next. I went over my bars and did a roll onto the road. Honestly though, it happened so fast, I was immediately back on my feet though I did freak out the nearby supporters and spectators. I even got a compliment for my roll. I credit that to my countless bails on the mountain bike. Practice makes perfect but I seriously need more practice on the rolling dismount and scouting out the dismount line properly.

Run
I was still a little disoriented coming into T2. I couldn't find my rack to put my bike on, and again one of those things you have to rehearse before the race. Things look different when there are less bikes on the rack. Anyway, once I found the rack, transition was systematic as well. Shoes, race number and Hammer gel (yes I tried it this time), then off I went. The run went through a neighborhood and this was a great leg also. It had some minor inclines but nothing like the bike leg. The neighborhood came out to cheer us on. Although I had a bit of a side cramp, it eventually went away. My ankle was a bit sore from the crash as well, but that too went away. I only managed to give up one position to another runner but made up plenty from others. There were 2 water stops, which were plenty enough for a 5k. I gave it a good kick at the end to finish at 1:20:08 (unofficial). I'm eagerly waiting for the official results. I felt great at the end, not like Sandman. I could have gone out for another race, though not at the same pace, but would have enjoyed another ride through the area.

Things I've learned:

T2 entry...again scouting the dismount line and starting to work on my transition earlier.

I actually like hills (on a bike).

To sum it up, this was probably the most enjoyable race I've done. The course, supporters and atmosphere were all excellent. This is also a really good race for tri beginners but too bad it was at the end of the season. I'm definitely signing up again for next year. I really enjoyed Richmond and it was great seeing an area that was bike friendly.

Next race, Cape Henry Duathlon.

Fallout 3 Gone Gold!!!

Finally, what we've been waiting for. scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Xbox 360'/>
PlayOn! + Hulu + 360 = Couch Potato Mode

So Matt's been been telling me about PlayOn! but I never really had the time to check it out. I've been watching Sons of Anarchy on TV but missed the pilot so rather than watching it online on my PC, I decided to give PlayOn a try.

It's basically an application that runs as a service on your PC and streams online video content to your Xbox 360, PS3 or HP MediaSmart TV. It acts like a browser as far as pulling feeds. You can set up your YouTube profile in the software and pull down your Favorites and Playlist on the fly. It seems to display the video in it's native resolution though. Although I have not been able to test this yet, you can enter in your Netflix account and have the ability to pull down from your online queue. I've been using mostly Hulu. I can find old TV shows like the A-Team to current ones like Fringe. Although it's streaming, the video quality isn't bad at all. The HD stream looks better than the SD I get from my DirectTV. Finding streams are easy enough also, all done from the 360 Dashboard.

Installing and running it was a breeze. It was so simple, I actually thought I missed something. It wasn't until I checked my 360 Dashboard that I realized the service was already running and streams were available. Buffering was pretty fast too. I was able to get a full movie to start within a minute.

There's a "beta" period for it for 45 days. The retail price is $30, which I think is worth it, especially for Hulu. I know the 360 Dashboard is supposed to receive a major update in November to include support for Netflix. I'll have to wait and see what other services it'll support. I have to thank Matt for this. My 360's longevity has increased. Oddly enough, I've been finding myself using my 360 less for gaming and more as a media center. I still miss using my HD DVD player though.

Yet another rider testing positive for doping.

First Edition Cycling News, October 7, 2008
Edited by Greg Johnson & Les Clarke

German federation reacts swiftly to Schumacher positive

The Bund Deutscher Radfahrer (BDR) will today open proceedings against Stefan Schumacher following his positive doping test announced yesterday. "But it is also good news. Hardly anyone now can slip through the net of the doping investigators," he added, emphasising that, "Stefan Schumacher will never again be nominated by the BDR. As many people have said after the movie, it made me want to go out and run a marathon. The story covers the perspectives and goals from different athletes from casual runners to professionals like Deena Kastor. Daniel Njenga's story was the most inspiring to me.

I would recommend this to any runner or even non-runners who enjoys inspirational stories. Amazon will have the DVD on sale along with Neoflix.com, where it can be bought from the official site.

My first "long" distance ride.

biked 32.3 miles in 1:37:03. I went out with the A group. They are now enforcing the speeds for the group, so A+ went out at 24 mph max and group A at 22mph max. I got to pull once at around 22-23 mph. We eventually got to the break point of either continuing the normal route of 20 miles or the longer route. Feeling good and adventurous, I went out with some others for the long ride. Ended up pulling again (total of 4 times). I was done at mile 25 after my 4th pull. I knew I was beyond my normal threshold in speed and distance. Although I had to solo it back at around 18-20 mph, it felt good going at my own pace. I didn't have to worry about maintaining distance or worry about the guy in front of me falling back too far from the group.

The total distance was around 32 miles, which surprised me. Not much data though if only about 500,000 have taken it.

My results:

Canal - 12.8 mile in 38:30

Biked at the Canal - 12.8 miles in 38:30.

Had to cut it short since I got there and the park was closing. I would have placed myself finishing at 25 mins or less. The conditions couldn't have been better, considering the 4-5 foot breakers we tried to practice in last Wed. The water was flat. Some racers considered it a fluke.

We swam out about 50 meters past the first buoy. I had problems with my goggles leaking every few strokes, so I would stop and drain it. I couldn't get my breathing down well at first and although some recommended I not do a warm up swim, I wish I had. Every time I stopped, it took a lot out of me trying to wade. I even went on my back once just to calm my breathing. I also kept running into some swimmers. I know it probably bothered the hell out of them so I decided to swim out farther, surprisingly. Also one of the problems swimming in this direction (shore to our left) is that I only practiced breathing from my right side. So every time I came up for air, I had nothing but the sun to reference. After awhile, I kept swimming out farther to sea. Once I finally got my bearing from the sun, I also eventually got my stroke rhythm down. Salt water sucks. Nasty, burns your throat and makes you thirsty. The wetsuit was a savior. I was able to swim a good portion of it with just my arms and rolling. After awhile, my goggles wouldn't bother me anymore either, though I would still swim with the right side having some water. I first started out counting 15 strokes, then doing a sight check, then 30 strokes then finally 60 as I got more comfortable.

For a good duration of the swim, all I would see is the blaring sun followed by the murkiness of the water and the blurry image of my arms, over and over until I did sight checks. I guess 60 strokes were too many to do towards the end before doing a sight check because at one point, I see a life guard on a surfboard to my right paddling alongside of me. I thought he was just checking on me, so I kept swimming. When I noticed he wasn't going away, I stop to drain the water out of my goggles and to see what was up. He yells out that I missed the turn. I looked down towards the beach and sure enough I was out and past maybe 150-200 meters from the last buoy. Thanking the life guard, I swing around and swim the hardest part of my swim. At the buoy, I can see the wave that started after mine, making their final turn but I was still another 100 meters out from them. For some reason, the swim towards to shore was harder than the swim parallel to the shore so it was rough trying to get back in. I even saw a volunteer trying to flag me in because he how far out past the buoy I got. Exhausted, I finally made contact with the sand and tried to get my breathing back under control. Once again, the wetsuit worked perfectly as the zipper didn't snag and I was able to slide it right off in the T.A.

I wasted no time with T1. After I got the wetsuit off, I put my shirt, sun glasses, and helmet on. I had no problems with the socks because I pre-rolled them and it took a second to put each one on. I saw some people struggling, sitting on the ground, trying to pull socks over wet feet. I decided not to do the transition with the shoes clipped on the bike. Although I practiced this many times, I didn't want to take my chances with a stumble just yet.

The ride was routine, just as I had practiced it. Just as the results stated, I averaged around 20 mph which was what I was aiming for, regardless of how I felt. Going out I passed a lot of people but I also got passed by others with aero bars and zip wheels. That's fine because I passed a fair share of those riders also. It was a little hard not to draft at times as the race lane was narrow and riders would bunch up a few times. We did have rolling officials though in case you got carried away. I did the best I could not to get into a draft window but at the same time, I wasn't going to tap my brakes for it. There were times where about 5 of us were together doing little pelotons, though we kept it spread out. Coming into T2, the dismount line snuck up on me, just as it did during the practice tri. I was only able to pull my left foot out but I had to clip out of my right. My intention was to slide my feet out of both of my shoes so I wouldn't have to worry about having to remove the shoes at T2. Either way, T2 came and gone and I was I into the run.

The run surprised me a little because I thought I would have had a faster time. I did stop twice though to rub my calves and quads down because I could feel the cramps coming on. The sun was beating down too. Although the race report indicates 77 degrees, this was in the morning. It was over 90 during the run. At the start of my run, I already saw walkers. Either way, although the run was no problem, I should have worked more on running during the weeks leading up to race. I think I neglected it a little.

Next up, Richmond Tri in October to close out the year. Only think different is that the swim will be in a pool instead of open water. Next year, an Olympic distance and then a Half Iron Man.
